April Fools & Art for Poetry Friday

April Fools

There’s fools for fools
and fools that need systems of rules.

There’s ghouls of fools
creating havoc and whirlpools.

There’s ghouls of fools
refusing using biofuels.

There’s ghouls of fools
manipulating molecules.

There’s ghouls of fools
who won’t tolerate ridicules.

There’s ghouls of fools
who want to change the public schools.

On April Fools
beware of boobies marked befools!

My intentions were to write a silly and light April Fools poem. I have to blame the road my poem traveled on the political chaos that seems to continuously barrage us. So, I’m also offering  this lighter April Fools poem by Myra Cohn Livingston. And it includes a school too. Visit the Poetry Foundation to read the rest of her delightful poem.

April Fool
The maple syrup’s full of ants.
A mouse is creeping on the shelf.
Is that a spider on your back?
I ate a whole pie by myself.
The kitchen sink just overflowed.
A flash flood washed away the school.
Have a Happy April Fools, and be sure to stop by The Poem Farm where Amy Ludwig VanDerwater is hosting Poetry Friday this week.

  1. Michelle,
Thank you for calling out the political fools.
I am bewitched with the portrait, you multi-talented poet!

And what fun, this April Foo by MCL.

    Poetry Month Mirth to You!

Your artwork is hilarious! I love the hidden dollar signs. Your poem is a mouthful. Did you read it out loud? Quite appropriate for the mouthful you-know-who is throwing around.

  3. Your tongue-twisting Oolish hidden-wish lamp-pool-ish poem delights me.

  4. Now that’s some fun wordplay, Michelle! (Love the edgy illo too!) Bracing myself for tomorrow… and the foolish escapades to come.

  5. Every day I turn on the news and have this nagging feeling that this must all be a dream, some sort of prank or joke, it can’t possibly all be real, these people can’t possibly be real! It all just seems to insane to be believed!

I loves doing April Fool’s jokes when I taught, and remember a few played on me by students. The poem brings thoughts of fools to a whole new level Michelle. I enjoyed each part, moving closer and closer to “upheaval”, but my favorite is the repeating line “ghouls of fools”, “truth”! Your art of Betsy belongs on an editorial page!

  7. “Ghouls of fools” indeed! You are spot on. And I’m with Linda. Send that piece to some papers. It’s dead right. I fear for these days, but lifting our voices matters. Thank you for raising yours. #Resist Happy Poetry Friday… 🙂

love your artwork and your poem! Yes, ghouls of fools! So much fun wordplay!

  9. ldk says:

Love the wordplay! Now that I am retired, I forgot all about tomorrow being April’s Fool Day! : )
    Thanks for you fun-filled reminder!

  10. It does seem like there are ghouls of fools everywhere we turn these days. I enjoyed your lighthearted poems and art to relieve some of the tension.

  11. Argh the ‘ghouls of fools’ that now govern our lives! Perfect poem for these times and this time of year, Michelle! =)

  12. Clever and fun! “There’s fools for fools” I love that first line.

  13. haitiruth says:

So many kinds of fools to be! I’m just glad we don’t have school on April Fools’ Day this year! 😀 Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com

  14. maryleehahn says:

I like the way you politicized your poem. Lots of fools. Lots of work to be done to block or undo their foolishness.

  15. cvarsalona says:

Stating it upfront in a delightful poem with political undertones: There’s ghouls of fools
who want to change the public schools. Thanks for the PF fun to start off NPM 14
