Happy Poetry Friday! I’m celebrating books and bookmarks today, just because I love both and because I have a bevy of bookmark offerings in my online Etsy shop that would love to meet up with one of your books at, Michelle Kogan Fine Art . This link will land you on the my home page, and from here you can follow the link to my Bookmarks page. So what better way to get this celebration started than with a list poem about bookmarks!
BOOKMARKS
Pieces of paper
poking out of
your pages–
Grab one
nab one
you just gotta
have one …
Tall ones
short ones–
Do you have a favorite one?
By that special author
or that special artist,
or that special critter,
or that one over there …
It became special
just … Because.
Oh me oh my,
your high and dry
without uh one.
We can fix that
in a hurry, but you
better scurry.
Think of all those words
all left alone,
all by themselves–
When you two are in
a completely different zone,
or maybe you’re on that
silly phone,
or I don’t know,
maybe you’re just
off on your own.
Awww now you’re all
tied up in knots,
and you can’t see any words,
but your seeing … SPOTS!
Drop EVERYTHING–
Run right out this minute–
Beg, buy, borrow,
but find a bookmark,
or there may never be
another tomorrow!

And here’s a list poem by Lee Bennett Hopkins.
WHY POETRY?
by Lee Bennett Hopkins
Why?
Why sunsets?
Why trees?
Why birds?
Why seas?
Why you?
Why me?
Why friends?
Read the rest of the poem at Nerdy Book Club, along with some other connected topics.
Buffy Silverman at Buffy’s Blog is hosting this weeks Poetry Friday Roundup, and she’s talking about Summer! Thanks Buffy, be sure to stop by her blog for more poetry!
BTW June 1–3 is #WearOrange in support of gun violence prevention, and there are events happening across the country.
Beautiful bookmarks, Michelle. And your list poem makes a mighty fine advertisement for them!
Thanks Buffy, low key though, I hope …
They are lovely, Michelle, and the poem fits perfectly. Love “Think of all those words
all left alone,”. I’m smiling about those lonely words!
Yes, those lonely words–they might try to rearrange themselves … Thanks Linda!
Wonderful post, Michelle! I love bookmarks. I pick up so many wherever I go I have to weed my collection every so often. But yours are stunning! What beautiful, beautiful bookmarks. I now think your poem should go with every set you sell!
Thanks Linda! And that’s a good idea to have that poem on the bookmark, I could have that as an option.
Some people collect matchbooks. I collect bookmarks. I’m thinking I need to add some Michelle Kogan originals to my collection!
Well thank you, Mary Lee! Wait a few days I’ll be added a few more. BTW I collect bookmarks too.
Your poem is lovely, and your bookmarks are beautiful! So much nicer than the ripped store receipt I’m using as a bookmark in the book I’m reading right now.
Thanks Kimberly, I sometimes have to use whatever’s at hand too!
Delightful poem and lovely bookmarks!
Thanks Jama! 🙂
Your bookmarks are beautiful and your poem just dances down the screen. Now if only I could ever find a real bookmark when I need one. I end up using whatever scrap of paper–receipts, gum wrappers, business cards, ribbon–I can find. Maybe I should write a poem with my list of unconventional bookmarks!
Thanks Kay, sure sounds like there’s a list poem in that material!
Your bookmarks are great! Makes me want to craft a few. I keep a stash of bookmarks in my classroom because kids always need one. Your list poem was a fun slide all the way.
Thanks Margaret, and how special to have bookmarks available for your students!
Beautiful! Wouldn’t it be a great idea if a bookmark would print off on the back of a receipt at a bookstore – especially one that was apropos for the book being purchased? Of course, they wouldn’t be as nice as yours!
Thanks Donna, that’s a great idea!
Love all those beautiful bookmark triptychs, Michelle, but one set most of all. (I think you can guess which one!) Perfectly ripe for grabbing and nabbing!
Oh thank you Michelle, yes they are all “ripe” and ready!D
Beautiful, Michelle! Like other folks, I do collect them. I still don’t always have them on hand when I’m reading — I’ve been known to use my phone as a bookmark, among other things!
That’s funny Tabatha, though I do occasionally use my phone to hold a book open, and I’ve used many different things for bookmarks too, thanks!
Lovely bookmarks and poetry. Clever of Lee Bennett Hopkins to figure out the why so elegantly.
Yes, Lee Bennett Hopkins knows, it’s just because … Thanks Brenda!
I’m a fellow bookmark lover! I tend to purchase bookmarks (and Christmas ornaments) when I travel. Both remind me of places I’ve been. Your bookmarks are beautiful and so is your poem.
Thanks Ramona, I like to purchase other bookmarks too, wherever I am!
Wonderful celebration of bookmarks, Michelle – and yours are always so very colorful and lovely. Hope they fly off the shelves and into new homes between covers of deserving words!
Thanks Robyn–sounds like a fun adventure for the bookmarks!
