I was looking for another Mother’s Day poem to share and came up this piece of writing by poet Annie Finch for her mother, poet Margaret Rockwell Finch. The writing piece is called: Happy Mother’s Day, to Foremothers, Poet-Moms, and Maggie. Follow the link for the whole read, and a poem by her mom Maggie at the end. Here’s the beginning:
Happy Mother’s Day, to Foremothers, Poet-Moms, and Maggie
by Annie Finch
“Today I went to visit my mother, Margaret Rockwell Finch, who turned 88 a few weeks ago. As always lately, she showed me a new poem. Maggie was my first model of a working poet, entering and once winning the contests of the Poetry Society of America, whose meetings she brought me to as a teenager; typing drafts and final copies (with carbon copies!) on her portable typewriter; keeping green metal fileboxes recording submissions to magazines and contests.”
Read the rest of the piece here.
And…some music by the composer Fanny Mendelssohn(1805 -1847)
My friend and poet Michelle Heidenrich Barnes is hosting the Poetry Friday roundup at her ever-runneth-over poetry blog, Today’s Little Ditty, thanks for hosting Michelle! Stop by to fill yourself up with poetry goodness…

Happy Mother’s Day, to Mom’s everywhere!
Thank you for this wonderful Mother’s Day post and its gently waving sunshine. I love that Annie Finch poem and her sassy mom.
Oh Mom’s presence… what a great list of the many hats a mom wears. Thank you! Thanks for the Fanny, too, whom I adore! xo
My favorites are the waving sunshine and that “Cleaner-upper” appears more than once in your list poem. Ha! So true. And, Annie Finch’s writing…wow…what wisdom in Maggie and in Annie for capturing this part of her mother. Thank you so much for sharing that piece. I’m a working mother…your list of things and a poet. And, I’ve never put poet at the top of the list. This piece gave me some beautiful perspective.
Happy Mother’s Day, Michelle! I love your list poem—and all of it TRUE! I’m thinking I may have to go pick up a pot of sunshine for my mom this weekend. 🙂
Happy Mother’s Day, Michelle. Thank you for all this goodness. Your art & poem lights up my world today. I love the “Put-back-togetherer”! And that ‘extra’ from Annie Finch!
Beautiful watercolor and spot-on list poem. Enjoyed Annie Finch’s piece and the classic music. Happy Mother’s Day weekend!
What an abundance of Mother’s Day goodies! Happy Mother’s Day to YOU!
I love Annie Finch’s tribute to her mother, and Margaret Finch’s poem is just elegant. I also love your Mother’s Day card and haiku and your skinny poem listing all the job descriptions of a mother. I think you exhausted the list! Happy Mother’s Day, Michelle!
Michelle, from the opening drawing to the musical interlude, I loved your post and am so glad I opened it on Mother’s Day. Many bright wishes I send to you today, Michelle.
Thanks Carol! I welcome the “bright wishes” it’s dark and rainy here today—but good for staying in and reading poetry…
Your posts are always filled with interesting tidbits. i especially enjoyed your list poem. SO very true!
Oh, mothers! So many hats they juggle. (Mother of strings players here, for many years – though sadly that seemed to end with school.) Love your cheering yellow sunshine poem and pic, too.
