I was looking for another Mother’s Day poem to share and came up this piece of writing by poet Annie Finch for her mother, poet Margaret Rockwell Finch. The writing piece is called: Happy Mother’s Day, to Foremothers, Poet-Moms, and Maggie. Follow the link for the whole read, and a poem by her mom Maggie at the end. Here’s the beginning:

“Today I went to visit my mother, Margaret Rockwell Finch, who turned 88 a few weeks ago. As always lately, she showed me a new poem. Maggie was my first model of a working poet, entering and once winning the contests of the Poetry Society of America, whose meetings she brought me to as a teenager; typing drafts and final copies (with carbon copies!) on her portable typewriter; keeping green metal fileboxes recording submissions to magazines and contests.”

My favorites are the waving sunshine and that “Cleaner-upper” appears more than once in your list poem. Ha! So true. And, Annie Finch’s writing…wow…what wisdom in Maggie and in Annie for capturing this part of her mother. Thank you so much for sharing that piece. I’m a working mother…your list of things and a poet. And, I’ve never put poet at the top of the list. This piece gave me some beautiful perspective.
