Happy Poetry Friday!
Thanks again to all the Poetry Sisters for their monotetra July poem prompt! Be sure to stop by their blogs and read their responses: Laura, Tanita, Mary Lee, Liz, Kelly, Tricia, Sara, and Andi. Find more of these poems tagged with #PoetryPals.
Here’s a little info on the monotetra poem form:
– 4 lines per stanza
–8 syllables per line
–each stanza mono-rhymes (has the same end rhyme)
–Final stanza of poem repeats same 4 syllables.
The Poetry Sisters also have a theme of transformation running through their poems this year, I don’t think my poem takes that in this time round…Well perhaps in a small way.
YELLOW-HEADED PARROT PERIL
Fly to my imagination
Yellow-headed talk-sensation,
Hundred-word-bird recitation
Hasten Nation, Hasten Nation.
Our habitats quickly shrinking
Pet trade trapping needs rethinking
Humans halt all your hoodwinking
Start clear thinking, Start clear thinking.

I’ll be creating an image of the Yellow-headed Parrot soon, though in the meantime I have two additional parrots featured in my Etsy shop. One as an archival print and another as an archival print and greeting card.
This is a Blue-and-Yellow Macaw, it’s in the macaw family of parrots. Unfortunately it’s endangered in some parts of South America, specifically Trinidad. It’s available in my Etsy Shop as an archival print.
Here’s a pair of doting Lovebirds that are also available in my Etsy Shop as an archival print, and as a greeting card.
The Poetry Friday Roundup is hosted this week by the lovely writer and poet Jan Godown Annino, at her blog Book Seed Studio. Thanks for hosting Jan! Her post is chock full of poetry books, nature, and all kinds of wonderful links to pursue, be sure to stop by and fill up on all the poetry goodness there.
What a fun poem form and I love your challenging rhymes. Beautiful paintings too. I’m reminded of my trip to Costa Rica last summer.

Michelle – monotetra, what a challenge! I appreciate the sentiment behind your Yellow-Headed Parrot Peril. I adore your affectionate Lovebirds painting, so full of expression and tenderness.
What a powerful call to action! We are losing so many species with our “hoodwinking.” I love love love your hyphenations!
You really made this form shine, Michelle — and your rhyme words were PERFECT. Hoodwinking is the very human trait responsible for habitats shrinking. Here’s to clear thinking and action for our parrots.
Michelle, well done with the yellow parrot poem. Yes, I see the transformation. Hopefully in this coming true, we may transform the future: “Pet trade trapping needs rethinking.” Beautiful prints, especially those doting lovebirds.
Great choice of the rhyming, so great rhythm, Michelle, and most important, the topic! You managed to insert more than one big ‘thing’ in your plea for parrots. I love the macaw painting, too.
Wow! I know this must have been a hard form to try and you nailed it!
